On one of our recent Beauty Business Babes Podcast episodes, we were able to hear from Master Sunless Trainer and Founder of Mint Tans, Cherie Silva as she joined Kelly to reveal 5 sunless secrets you may not know about!

1. Stretching your solution

This is an especially useful secret for mobile artists because you have to carry all of your equipment and solutions with you as you go to each appointment. If you’re a mobile artist you know how difficult and tiresome it can be to have to maneuver bags on bags of heavy equipment into people’s houses.Your goal is to make everything as compact and easy to travel with as possible. In order to stretch your solution, it’s beneficial to carry the lightest version and the darkest version of the brand you love so that you can mix the solution to give every client the depth of color they desire. With these two ends of the spectrum, you can then go about doing DHA % calculations so that you can customize the strength of DHA for each individual client.

2. Colour Theory

Our goal as a spray tan artist is to achieve brown. When you combine the primary colors of red, blue and yellow, brown will be the result. You can take into account your client’s skin tone and then choose a solution that has a color-base that will work with their natural skin tone to achieve a brown tone. For example, a client that is naturally pink toned would want to go with a solution that has a green-base to counteract that pink or red undertone. For more information on color theory, our Master’s Certification Course has a brand new lesson that goes over color bases and bronzers so that you can get the most beautiful blend for every skin tone.

3. Dealing with Sunburn

The peeling and cracking of the skin that occurs after a sunburn takes place because of a lack of hydration. The key to spray tanning a client that has a sunburn is to make sure the skin stays extremely hydrated to avoid peeling. Start by using a slough wipe or an exfoliating mitt with the prep spray already on it and have the client buff out the sunburn area. Next you’ll dry the area and prep spray the entire body. Then, using a water based lotion you will coat the area that is sunburnt. Finally you will tan the rest of the body trying to avoid directly tanning the sunburn and allowing the overspray to catch it instead.

4. Prep Spray

The point of prep spray is to add hydration, neutralize products or sweat on skin and dissolve any residue on the skin. Extra hydration is always a benefit, so it’s good insurance to always use prep spray. You can also concentrate the spray on drier areas, such as the shins or hands. To apply, we recommend to either let the spray dry, have your clients rub it in or even wipe with a towel. Some artists may not feel that the prep spray makes much of a difference over all, but remember that adding any sort of hydration to the skin before and after the tan will always benefit the integrity and quality of your service.

5. Green Armpits

Most people think that green armpits are a reaction from the DHA, however, after testing different solutions, Cherie found that the bronzer is what created that green effect. If you’re a spray tan artist that has niched themselves into the wedding industry and you find yourself spraying brides on a consistent basis, you may want to try out a clear based solution that has no added bronzer in case a client were to accidentally leave on deodorant for their appointment. You can also test out the solutions you currently use with deodorant to see if there is a green tint that takes place once the solution with bronzer is applied.

These tips are top notch! This is just the beginning of all of the information that you can receive when you register to be certified by Spray Tan Class. If you want more in-depth explanations of these 5 sunless tips, subscribe and listen to the Beauty Business Babes Podcast on Spotify or iTunes.
